Strengthening Agricultural Cooperatives and Farmers' Incomes in Burundi
PARECOOP aims to improve the incomes and employment opportunities of farmers in Kirimiro by structuring and strengthening agricultural cooperatives. By enhancing production, processing, and marketing, the project contributes to a more inclusive and sustainable rural economy.
Project description
Implemented with ADISCO, PARECOOP supports farmers by improving agricultural practices, providing access to inputs, and developing cooperatives. In a context of high inflation, fuel shortages, and trade restrictions, the project promotes high-value crops such as maize, soybeans, pineapples, and livestock farming. It also helps structure relationships between farmers and local enterprises to secure markets for their products.
Challenges & perspectives
Challenges include fluctuating input costs and regulations on processed product packaging. The next key steps include building storage infrastructure and formalizing commercial relationships between cooperatives and markets to ensure the project's sustainability.
